PD: Robbery at Tempe McDonald's linked to 6 othersPosted: Updated:
TEMPE, Ariz. -- A McDonald's restaurant at 48th Street and Southern Avenue was robbed Monday morning and police believe it's the latest in a series of armed robberies targeting fast-food restaurants in Tempe and Phoenix.
The suspect entered the restaurant just after 5 a.m., displayed a handgun and demanded money from the employees, according to Tempe police Sgt. Steve Carbajal.
The suspect fired two shots while inside the restaurant, but the employees and one patron were not injured. He was not able to obtain money from the business and fled in a white mid- to late '90 model van.
The suspect was described as a black male with a medium build, 30 to 45 years old and approximately 5 feet 7 inches tall. He was wearing a dark jacket, black-and-white shorts, and black tennis shoes.
Police released a surveillance photo from the robbery in the hopes that someone will recognize the suspect.
Police said this incident is the latest in a string of armed robberies at Subway and McDonald's restaurants in Phoenix and Tempe. Police believe three suspects have been involved in the robberies.
Six similar incidents occurred on the following dates:
Sept. 15 – 2000 block of West Baseline Road, Tempe
Oct. 2 – 4000 block of East Ray Road, Phoenix
Oct. 4 – 800 block of West Baseline Road, Tempe
Oct. 7 – 800 block of West Broadway Road, Tempe
Oct. 10 – 2400 block of East Baseline Road, Phoenix
Oct. 17 – 1400 block of West Baseline Road, Tempe
Detectives are working to identify and locate the suspects responsible for the armed robberies.
