Snow brings NB I-17 to standstill outside FlagstaffPosted: Updated:
NEAR FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- Heavy snow has blocked northbound Interstate 17 south of Flagstaff, bringing traffic to a standstill for a time.
Conditions have forced the Department of Public Safety to close I-17 at State Route 179, which is the Sedona turn-off.
Vehicles allowed past that point prior to the closure were required to have chains or four-wheel drive.
The area has since reopened, but ADOT advises drivers to use caution as temperatures remain near freezing in the Flagstaff area and some snow and ice remain on the roadways in the area.
Meanwhile, snow and ice is reported on Interstate 40 both east and westbound near Flagstaff.
For the most current information about highway closures and restrictions statewide, visit ADOT’s Travel Information Site at www.az511.gov or call 5-1-1.
Flagstaff received about 6 inches of snow over the weekend. Overnight, an additional 3 inches has come down. Estimates are that the city will get about a foot of snow by the time the storm moves out of the state.
Ryan O'Donnell, who is on his way up to Flagstaff, reported via Skype about 20 miles south of the city.
