Valley man gets refund from puppy breeder that never delivered

PHOENIX - Dean McGovern wanted another addition to his four-footed family.

“We've got a pretty active dog and we just felt like having another companion with him was the right thing to do,” McGovern said.

While searching online, he came across a website called which claims to specialize in French Bulldogs.

So McGovern set up an appointment to visit Royal Puppy Kennel and found the perfect dog.

“It was a beautiful dog so that's why I just kinda fell in love with it,” he said.

McGovern paid $2,600 for the dog, even though it was too young to take home.

Two weeks later, when he was supposed to pick up the puppy, McGovern said Royal Puppy Kennel told him the pup had caught a virus and had to be euthanized.

“Obviously, I was really disappointed,” he said. “It was just such a quality dog.”

Royal Puppy Kennel offered to find McGovern another French Bulldog, but he said he wasn't comfortable doing that.

“I couldn't trust that the puppy couldn't be from a puppy mill,” he said.

McGovern asked for a refund but said he never got his money back. He even filed a complaint in small claims court and won a judgment for $2,500.

Still, McGovern hasn't received a dime so he contacted 3 On Your Side.

“When you work hard for your money and you pay it out, you know, you want to have a product or a service or something in return for that money,” he said.

We got a hold of Royal Puppy Kennel and although they refused to discuss the matter with us, something did happen.

Royal Puppy Kennel gave McGovern a check for $1,300, half of what they owe him.

While it's not the full amount, McGovern said he probably wouldn't have received anything without 3 On Your Side's involvement.
