Armed robbery suspect crashes while allegedly running from policePosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- An armed robbery suspect is in the hospital after getting into a car wreck while allegedly running from the police.
It happened at about 11:15 a.m. Thursday at the Famous Footwear at Fourth Street and Bell Road, according to Trent Crump of the Phoenix Police Department.
It started when police received a call about a robbery in progress at the shoe store. The suspect was gone by the time officers arrived on the scene, but her vehicle was spotted about a mile away in the area of 12th Street and Grovers Avenue.
Not only did the vehicle match the description of the suspect's vehicle, the driver matched the description of the suspect.
Officers tried to pull the car over, but the driver refused to stop. After a short pursuit, the suspect's vehicle collided with an F-150 pickup at the intersection of Union Hills Drive and Cave Creek Road, about three miles from the Famous Footwear.
The suspect suffered serious injuries. She was taken into custody and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
The man who was behind the wheel of the pickup was taken to a local hospital as a precaution.
Detectives from both Robbery and Vehicular Crimes are on the scene as the investigation ramps up.
Police are still trying to piece everything together, but they said they recovered a weapon at the crash scene.
Investigators are not releasing any information about the suspect at this time. Crump said the woman is a suspect in other robberies in the area, as well as in Scottsdale.
