Dust storms cause dangerous driving conditionsPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- Arizona's Department of Public Safety offers several tips for driving in dusty conditions.
1. If you are aware that you are approaching a dust storm, exit the interstate and wait for the dust storm to pass.
2. If you find yourself in the middle of the dust storm, turn on your lights and slow down. Keep in mind, if you stop on the roadway it could potentially hurt you and others.
3. If you find it necessary to stop, pull completely off the roadway, turn your lights off, and take your foot off of the brake.
4. Have emergency items such as food and water in your vehicle in the event you are stranded for an extended period of time.
Dust storms have caused several pile-ups this year, the most recent happening on Interstate 10 south of Phoenix on Oct. 4. One person was killed and several more were injured in the massive pileup.
