MESA, Ariz. -- One person is dead after a minivan rear-ended a street sweeper on southbound Gilbert Road in Mesa Tuesday morning.

It happened shortly after 6 a.m. just north of University Drive near Riviera Plaza Shopping Center.

Aerial video of the scene showed extensive damage to the minivan. According to the Mesa Police Department, the driver of that minivan was pronounced dead at a local hospital. He has been identified as Charles Lopez, 22, of the Salt River Pima Indian Community.

The driver of the street sweeper suffered minor injuries and is expected to recover.

Investigators do not know what caused the van to hit the street sweeper, which was moving at about 5 mph, but they do not believe the minivan was going faster than the posted speed limit.

The southbound lanes of Gilbert Road were closed in the area for quite some time while police conducted their investigation.
