Father of jailed former Nogales mayor gets prison termPosted: Updated:
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) -- The father of former Nogales Mayor Octavio Garcia Von Borstel has been sentenced to two years in prison and seven years' probation on charges of fraud and illegally conducting an enterprise.
Octavio Garcia Suarez was facing up to a four-year prison term at Monday's sentencing in Tucson.
The Arizona Attorney General's Office sought indictments for the 60-year-old Suarez and Von Borstel after Western Union won a civil lawsuit against them and investigators uncovered independent evidence they were involved in money laundering.
Prosecutors say the two men pleaded guilty for allegedly defrauding Western Union out of nearly $618,000.
Von Borstel was sentenced in August to 3 1/2 years in prison and seven years' probation. He pleaded no contest to illegally conducting an enterprise and guilty to fraud.
