AVONDALE/GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- One person is dead and another is in the hospital after a wreck that shut down a portion of Interstate 10 in the West Valley for several hours early Monday morning.
It happened just after 2 a.m. in the westbound lanes of I-10 at Dysart Road. According to the Department of Public Safety, a speeding truck rear-ended a Jeep, causing it to flip over.
The truck smashed into a guard rail, flipped over it and crashed at the bottom of wash, about 50 feet below the roadway. The driver of that truck was ejected when the vehicle hit the rail. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
The driver of the Jeep, which came to rest on its roof, was transported to a local hospital. The nature of that person's injuries was not immediately available but he or she is expected to recover.
DPS investigators were on the scene for about four hours trying to reconstruct the moments leading up to the crash. It's not clear if alcohol or drugs were factors in the wreck.
Investigators have not released any information about either of the drivers.
The freeway reopened to traffic at about 6:15 a.m., just in time for the morning rush hour. Aerial video of the freeway showed an major traffic backup when the freeway reopened, but traffic quickly returned to normal.
