MESA, Ariz. -- A toddler is dead after being hit by a pickup truck in an apartment complex parking lot.
It happened around 6 p.m. Sunday near the U.S. 60 and Higley Road in Mesa.
Mesa police Sgt. Ed Wessing said the boy ran out from between two parked cars and approached the truck on the passenger side. The driver could not see the toddler and he was hit.
Family members took the 23-month-old boy to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The family told detectives that the child was capable of unlocking and opening the locked front door of their apartment.
The boy's mother said that he was missing only minutes from the apartment and that family members were already out on foot in the complex looking for the boy when the collision occurred, according to Wessing.
Police said the driver of the truck was not impaired and stayed on the scene.
