Man faces murder charges after stepdaughter diesPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- A 3-year-old girl who police say was abused by her stepfather has died and the suspect will face murder charges.
Corey Rasean Daniels, 22, reportedly admitted beating his stepdaughter because she was talking back and not eating her dinner.
Daniels was charged with four counts of child abuse after Phoenix police say he severely beat Dani Mayo with his fists and a belt.
Sgt. Tommy Thompson said Dani died from her injuries on Saturday. He said Daniels now faces murder charges.
The Phoenix Fire Department found Dani unresponsove at a home near 48th Street and Warner Road late Thursday afternoon.
She was transported to a local hospital where doctors said she had multiple skull fractures, bruises, retinal hemorrhages, and bleeding and swelling in the brain.
According to court documents, Daniels admitted punching Dani in the chest, arms and legs.
Daniels told police he struck the girl because she did not want to eat her hot dog and was back-talking.
The alleged abuse happened while the girl's mother was at work.
