Man with knives shot by Avondale officerPosted: Updated:
AVONDALE, Ariz. -- Glendale police are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Avondale.
Around 4 p.m. Thursday, Avondale police were called to a home near 117th Avenue and Yuma Street after receiving a call that Gregory I. Martinez, 20, was being disorderly and causing damage to the residence.
Officer Kevin Sapp arrived and found Martinez outside the home with two large knives, according to Detective Reuben Gonzales with the Avondale Police Department.
Martinez ignored Sapp's commands to drop the knives and advanced on the officer. Gonzales said Sapp was forced to shoot the suspect.
Martinez was transported to a Phoenix hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Sapp was not injured in the incident.
The Glendale Police Department is handling the shooting investigation as Avondale police conduct an internal investigation.
Sapp has been with the Avondale Police Department for two years. He will be placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure for any officer-involved shooting.
