London Bridge Resort celebrates bridge's anniversary with $40/person ratePosted: Updated:
LAKE HAVASU CITY, Ariz. -- The iconic London Bridge celebrated its 40th anniversary in Lake Havasu City earlier this month and in honor of that, the London Bridge Resort is offering a special $40-per-person rate for stays through Nov. 22.
“The London Bridge is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Arizona and we want to offer this special discount promotion as an opportunity to invite a new generation of guests to the unique landmark and experience the many recent upgrades to the property,” said Cal Sheehy, general manager of London Bridge Resort, in a news release.
There has been a bridge at or near the same location over the River Thames for nearly 2,000 years. The first was a wooden span built by the Romans in roughly 50 A.D.
The iteration of the London Bridge that now calls Lake Havasu City home is known as the "New" London Bridge, having replaced a structure that was more than 600 years old. It was designed by in 1799 by Scottish engineer John Rennie. Construction was completed in 1831. While the bridge was an architectural masterpiece, it was not built to handle 20th century traffic, so by 1924 one side of the bridge had sunk between three and four inches lower than that other.
In 1967, the Common Council of the City of London started looking for potential buyers for the London Bridge (not the Tower Bridge). With a bid of nearly $2.5 million, Lake Havasu City founder Robert P. McCulloch became that buyer.
The famous bridge was dismantled block by block and shipped 5,300 miles to Arizona where it was painstakingly reconstructed on Lake Havasu's waterfront, spanning the Bridgewater Channel. It was rededicated in Lake Havasu City on Oct. 10, 1971, going on to become the second-largest tourist attraction in the state behind the Grand Canyon.
Today, the bridge is not only a popular gathering place for boaters and tourists, it also connects Lake Havasu City and Lake Havasu Island.
