MESA, Ariz. -- Mesa police arrested a man for child abuse after he allegedly whipped his daughter with an extension cord because she cut her hair.

Investigators said Wilson Bradley Yazzie Jr., 38, also allegedly grabbed his daughter by the hair and smacked her face with an open hand on Saturday.

Police said the girl had a red loop mark from her wrist to her elbow from the extension cord.

According to court documents, Yazzie told police he was "wrong for going after his daughter and whipping her like that."

He said he was trying to discipline her for cutting her hair, which is against their religious beliefs.

Yazzie, who has a prior history of domestic violence, was charged with one count of child abuse.
