GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Goodyear police said a man accused of killing his wife in Mesa last year apparently killed himself last week.

At around noon Thursday, police were called to a home on the 17400 block of West Wren Road in Goodyear after relatives found Robert Benoit, 42, taped to a lawn chair at the bottom of a swimming pool.

The first police officer on the scene jumped into the pool to help family members remove Benoit from the water. Additional officers started emergency first aid until Goodyear Fire and Southwest Ambulance personnel arrived.

Benoit was transported to West Valley Hospital and pronounced dead a short time later.

A note was recovered at the home and the preliminary investigation indicates the death was a suicide, according to the Goodyear Police Department.

Benoit was charged with second-degree murder in the death of his wife. He allegedly shot and killed Joy Dockendorf, 37, at their home near Thomas and Recker roads in October 2010.

Police said Benoit was suicidal after the shooting and took off for Mexico. Detectives were able to contact him on his cell phone and he turned himself in to police in Huachuca City.
