Police: Apartment where 1-year-old was killed is hot spot for drugsPosted: Updated:
MESA, Ariz. -- Mesa police describe the Mesa apartment complex where a 1-year-old was shot and killed earlier this month a drug-trafficking hot spot.
According to investigators the apartment at Main Street and Horne had been the scene of two other violent home invasions.
The 1-year-old boy was killed Oct. 10 when two armed men confronted his grandmother while she was hanging laundry outside.
"We don't know if it was drug related or what the motivating factor was here," Mesa police Sgt. Ed Wessing said not long after the shooting. He said officers do not believe the suspects intended to shoot the baby.
"This is generally a safe neighborhood, like for walking at night, but something like this, it just throws you for a loop," said Gene Darnell, who lives across the street from where the shooting took place.
One witness reported seeing the suspects running from the apartment complex across nearby school grounds, but officers did not find them.
At this point, police have not made any arrests nor have they been able to identify the two men believed to be responsible for the child's death.
