Girl calls 911 during parents' fightPosted: Updated:
GILBERT, Ariz. -- Police responded to a Gilbert home Sunday night after a 9-year-old child reported her parents were trying to kill each other.
A neighbor also called police and reported witnessing a woman attempting to stab a male with a knife outside the home near Elliot and McQueen roads.
Officers arrived and made sure the 9-year-old was safe then attempted to make contact with the couple. Police said they refused to answer the telephone or door so officers forced their way in.
Officers located Laura Fregoso, 31, and Jonathan Steffen, 21, inside the home. They both sustained small cuts and bruises, but no one was stabbed.
Fregoso and Steffen were arrested for aggravated assault and disorderly conduct. Both were booked into Fourth Avenue Jail.
Police said Steffen is the child's stepdad.
