Wheelchair-bound man shot, killed after threatening officersPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- Phoenix police officers shot and killed a man in a wheelchair after he reportedly pointed a gun at them early Saturday morning.
The shooting happened at approximately 2:30 a.m. at the Central Bus and Light Rail station at First Avenue and Van Buren Street.
Police said the man got into a fight with a woman believed to be his girlfriend and shot at her, but she wasn't hit.
As officers approached the suspect, he wheeled away and became belligerent, according to Sgt. Steve Martos.
The man then turned back toward the officers and retrieved a handgun from his waistband. Martos said the officers gave several verbal commands for the suspect to drop the gun, but he pointed it at the officers.
The officers opened fire and the man was shot and killed. He was identified as David Valenzuela.
"They had no choice other than to stop the threat by shooting at this individual," Martos said.
Investigators believe alcohol played a factor.
Neither officer was injured. They have both been with the department for 13 years.
