EL MIRAGE, Ariz. -- A 2-year-old boy who was hospitalized last week has died and his mother's boyfriend is now being charged with murder.

Police officers were called to a home in the 12000 block of Acapulco Drive in El Mirage on Thursday after paramedics found the child unresponsive but breathing.

The boy was transported to Boswell Hospital for further evaluation. Doctors found non-accidental head injuries and the toddler was airlifted to Phoenix Children's Hospital, according to Officer Robert Peoples of the El Mirage Police Department.

Hospital staff said the child was brain dead, according to court documents.

Officers questioned Gregory Amador, 21, about the boy's injuries.

According to court paperwork, Amador said he was angry at the child and spanked him, but the boy continued to make him angry by not doing what he was supposed to be doing.

Amador initially told police that the child fell out of his high chair and hit his head but later admitted that he pulled the boy out of his high chair and "dropped" him to the ground.

Amador said the boy was unresponsive, but he didn't notify anyone right away because he was scared. Amador later called the Fire Department.

Amador had been charged with child abuse, but Monday detectives added an additional charge of first-degree murder.

His bond was set at $100,000.
