Tanker fire closes SR 85 in Buckeye for hours overnightPosted: Updated:
BUCKEYE, Ariz. – A tanker fire forced a nine-house closure of State Route 85 at Baseline Road in Buckeye early Monday morning.
According to the Department of Public Safety, a tanker carrying about 8,800 gallons of gasoline collided with a minivan and another vehicle late Sunday night. The rear tires, the aluminum undercarriage and the hose lines on that tanker caught fire. The flames, however, did not breach the walls of the tanker and ignite the gasoline inside.
Once firefighters knocked down the flames, it took about three hours to offload the fuel to another tanker. That backup tanker left the scene shortly after 5 a.m.
After the fuel had been dealt with, crews were able to clear the wreckage, loading the crippled tanker and mangled minivan on to flatbed trucks and hauling them away.
The driver of the minivan reportedly suffered minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital. Neither the driver of the semi nor the people in the other vehicle were injured.
Traffic was flowing normally again by 7 a.m.
It’s not clear what caused the crash in the first place. The wreck is under investigation.
