Death penalty for man convicted of murdering 2 prostitutes
By Catherine Holland
PHOENIX – A jury on Friday sentenced a Mesa man to death for murdering two prostitutes.
Trent Benson was also sentenced to 135 years for eight other offenses including kidnapping and sexual assault.
Benson was convicted last month on two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of sexual assault and kidnapping in the rape and killing of two prostitutes and the sexual assault of two other women. Investigators said those attacks stemmed from his rage about how much the women were charging.
Benson was arrested in May 2008, just two days after police announced that they had connected two unsolved rape/murder cases and two recent kidnapping/sexual assault cases to a single suspect.
Prior to his 2008 arrest, Benson had a criminal history that included the solicitation of prostitutes.
Frank Camacho will have the latest on this story, including comments from four of the jurors, on “Good Evening! Arizona,” which starts at 4:30 p.m. on 3TV.
