PICACHO, Ariz. -- A sudden dust storm along Interstate 10 near Picacho Peak cut visibility and led to a pileup of up to 30 vehicles.  The Arizona Department of Public Safety confirms one fatality and says its initial assessment shows as many as 15 people seriously injured..

The accident happened at about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Strong winds from an approaching cold front kicked up the dust.

DPS and the Arizona Department of Transportation closed the highway in both directions.  There was no immediate word on how long the closure will last.

People from Tucson and Southern Arizona driving to Phoenix for tonight's National League Divisional Series game between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Milwaukee Brewers were urged to use Highway 77 (Oracle Road in Tucson) to Highway 79 at Oracle Junction and take 79 north through Florence to U.S. 60 at Apache Junction.  Drivers can take U.S. 60 west to rejoin I-10 in Tempe.
