Mark Nehrenz By Jennifer Thomas
PHOENIX -- A Phoenix firefighter is accused of hitting a teenager with his pickup truck then leaving the scene.
Police said the teen was hit near 19th Avenue and Union Hills Drive Saturday afternoon. According to court paperwork, he was rollerblading in a crosswalk at the time.
The driver left the scene but was followed by a witness. Officers found him a short time later and took him into custody.
The driver has been identified as Phoenix Fire Engineer Mark Nehrenz, 56. He told offiers that he was an off-duty Phoenix firefighter.
Phoenix police believe that alcohol was a factor.
The teen suffered a fractured hip but is expected to be OK.
Nehrenz is being held on $10,000 bond for leaving the scene of an injury accident.
Nehrenz has been with the Phoenix Fire Department for nearly 34 years. He has been placed on administrative reassignment pending the outcome of an internal investigation. The Fire Department is awaiting the results of the police investigation.
