Human skull on Craigslist under investigationPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX - A human skull posted for sale online got the Phoenix Police Department's attention.
Police seized the skull from the owner and are trying to determine if it is in fact a human skull or just a prank.
A local man posted an ad on Craigslist listing the skull for $300. The seller, Mike Hale, said he bought the skull for $1 at a garage sale and hoped to sell it for $300.
Hale stated in the ad that the skull is thought to be that of 12- to 14-year-old child. That details alone made police suspicious, because they said children usually don't die of natural causes.
There is no law prohibiting the sale or possession of a human bone.
Homicide detectives have taken the skull to have it tested by the medical examiner to determine if there was any foul play.
The medical examiner is going to examine the skull to determine if it is real and who it might have belonged to. Police will also try to see if it is linked to a homicide or a missing person case.
Police said if everything checks out the skull will be returned to Hale.
