PHOENIX – Police arrested a 31-year-old driver Tuesday night after he reportedly hit a 10-year-old girl near Greenway and Dysart roads in Surprise then fled the scene.

Police said the girl was crossing Westpoint Parkway near Rimrock Street with her 14-year-old sister when she was struck by a white Toyota Camry at about 7:20 p.m. Tuesday.

Witnesses told officers the male driver got out of the car, checked on the girl and then fled the scene.

The girl was flown to Phoenix Children’s Hospital. She sustained serious but non life-threatening injuries.

Witnesses provided a license plate number to police and officers were able to locate the driver a short time later.

George Paulis, of Glendale, admitted to police that he was the driver that struck the girl and waited for police at his place of employment in El Mirage, according to Sgt. Mark Ortega with the Surprice Police Department.

Paulis told police that he was in a state of panic when he fled the accident scene. Officers determined that he was not impaired.

Paulis was arrested and charged with a felony count of failing to stop at an injury accident then booked into the Maricopa County Fourth Avenue Jail.
