Bicyclist stable after being hit by impaired driverPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX - Phoenix police believe impairment played a role in a serious injury collision involving a bicyclist on Saturday afternoon.
Detectives who arrived on scene after the collision evaluated the driver, Sonya Shalomayeva, 65, and found her to be impaired.
Police believe Shalomayeva was driving southbound on Cave Creek Road and drove on to the right shoulder striking the 52-year-old man on his bicycle near Jomax Road.
After the collision Shalomayeva drove over the raised median and struck a tree. She then continued southbound in the northbound lanes where she finally applied her breaks and stopped the vehicle.
Detectives believe she was under the influence of drugs, but are waiting results of drug analysis to determine exactly what she was under the influence of.
She was booked on aggravated assault charges.
The victim is listed in stable but critical condition at an area hospital.
