BUCKEYE, Ariz. - The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office says officers shot and killed a man in the West Valley Friday evening after the suspect threatened officers with a knife.

MCSO spokesman Sgt. Jesse Spurgin said that deputies were called to the scene near 355th Avenue and McDowell to assist the Buckeye Police Department, which had responded to a report of an aggravated assault in the area.

Deputies located the suspect and reported he was acting "erratically" and carrying a knife.

The Department of Public Safety was called in for back-up. As officers approached the suspect, he allegedly took off on foot.

Spurgin says the suspect did not respond to verbal commands or the use of a Taser. The suspect reportedly then advanced on officers with the knife, prompting multiple officers to fire shots.

The suspect, identified on Tuesday as William Gene Short, 38, was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were hurt.

The shooting remains under investigation.
