Father refs after-school fight between teens, armed with handgunPosted: Updated:
GILBERT, Ariz. -- A Valley dad is under arrest for encouraging a fight involving his sons and another boy, and allegedly using a handgun to keep others from stepping in to help.
The family affair happened on Tuesday at a park near Val Vista and Elliot in Gilbert.
Freddy Canada, 16, says emotions have been running high between Gabriel Conde, 14 and himself and he figured it would end in a fist fight.
What he didn't know was that he'd be up against an entire family.
Police say Gabriel Conde, 33, brought his two sons - Gabriel Jr. and David Bustillos, 17, to the fight.
Canada says he and Gabriel Jr. were throwing punches and after a few minutes Conde sent his oldest son in to help, pinning Canada's arms back so his brother could hit him.
The fight was captured on cell phone footage.
Witnesses say they tried to stop the fight at that point but were stopped. Court documents state Conde began "waiving a gun around at people at the fight... and threatened to kill" anyone who stepped in.
"He was just saying how he'd kill everyone," said one boy who did not want to be identified.
Canada ended up with a black eye, sore jaw, and bruised ribs.
Conde and his family left to return to their home just a few miles away. Police went to his residence but say Conde did not surrender until multiple officers surrounded the home and called him out by loud speaker.
Conde has a criminal past that include charges of child abuse, disorderly conduct and assaulting a police officer.
He now faces new charges including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, disorderly conduct and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
His sons are also being charged in juvenile court. All of the boys attend Gilbert High School.
Officials there wouldn't comment on the students status and whether any of them would be suspended or expelled.
