Places to avoid using your debit card

PHOENIX – Debit cards have become very popular over the past few years.

Debit card transactions take money out of your checking account so you don't have to carry cash with you. With that in mind, you don't want to give just anyone access to your bank account, do you?

Although debit cards make buying things easier, there are some places that you never want to use them.

According to www.mainstreet.com you should never use your debit card when renting a car. The rental company takes your money out of your bank account in the form of a security deposit. Sometimes that deposit can be pretty big and this may drain your account. However, on a credit card, the money is just frozen and not actually charged.

Restaurants and bars are also places to avoid whipping out your debit card. The reason, of course, is that the waiter or waitress actually walks away with your card in order to pay the bill and who knows what can happen when your debit card is out of your sight.

Auto payments using your debit card is also a bad idea. If you use your computer to automatically sign up to pay your bills, try inputting a credit card number instead.

That way, if you have a dispute, the wrong amount that was taken won't be missing from your bank account.

Finally, avoid using your debit card in WIFI areas. Many WIFI areas are in unsecure areas and this can make an online transaction with your debit card an easy target for hackers who may steal your information.

Remember, you usually have better fraud protection when it comes to using you credit card as opposed to using your debit card.
