PHOENIX – Two inmates allegedly attacked detention officers at a Maricopa County jail.

Two inmates housed at the Fourth Avenue Jail identified as Felix Vasquez and Christopher Santome, both 19 years old, are accused of trying to stab two detention officers on Tuesday with a handmade weapon commonly known as a “shank.”

The inmates were reportedly being removed from their cell for a routine search when they attacked the two officers before being subdued.

The officers involved in the attack received only minor injuries and were taken to the hospital to be treated.

“I will not tolerate assaults on my officers, and I have ordered that the two inmates involved in the assault be fed bread and water,” Sheriff Joe Arpaio said.

Vasquez was arrested October 2008 in the murder of off-duty Corrections Officer Bradley Gerrard and Santome is also charged with murder and has an immigration hold.
