SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – One man is dead and two others are on the loose after an early morning shooting at a Scottsdale apartment complex and police are now trying to determine if drug activity was a factor.

It happened at the Scottsdale Springs apartments on Osborn Road east of Miller Road. Several neighbors called 911 to report gunfire at about 2:45 a.m. Tuesday.

When police arrived on the scene, they made contact with a woman in her 20s who said she was a friend of the victim, a 21-year-old man.

According to that woman, the victim got into a fight with two other men. At some point, one of those men pulled a gun and opened fire.

It's not clear if the woman witnessed the actual shooting. The victim was hit several times. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The two suspects ran away.

Detectives have not determined if the victim was armed or if there was an exchange of gunfire.

All of this happened in a common walkway outside an apartment believed to be the victim’s.

“The officers went into the apartment, which we believe is his, and they did find evidence of drug activity inside,” said Sgt. Mark Clark of the Scottsdale Police Department.

Detectives have not said exactly what they found nor have they determined if that apparent drug activity is connected to the fight and subsequent shooting.

"We are actively investigating this," Clark said.

Police are following a few leads and are using what the woman told them to try and track down the suspects. So far, however, investigators have not released any details about those men or about the victim.

Clark said investigators do not believe the suspects are still in the area.

Nobody else was hurt in the shooting.
