PHOENIX -- A Phoenix mother is facing charges after her 5-year-old daughter was found roaming an apartment complex by herself.

Samantha Hemphill, 22, has been charged with child endangerment, assault on an officer and resisting arrest.

Hemphill allegedly left her daughter alone for two hours Wednesday before an apartment manager found her roaming the grounds near Camelback Road and 39th Avenue and called police.

Officials said Hemphill returned and started cursing when she saw police officers and Child Protective Services workers taking her daughter.

Police said she resisted arrest then kicked and screamed in the back of the patrol car. According to court paperwork, Hemphill kicked a police officer in the upper left leg and chest.

The child is in CPS custody.
