PHOENIX (AP) -- The city of Phoenix has received a $1 million grant to help build a new emergency operations center.

The grant comes from the Department of Homeland Security and will go toward the $3 million center.

The other $2 million for the center comes from bond funds approved in 2006.

Mayor Phil Gordon says that the center will better prepare Phoenix for natural and human-caused disasters.

The center will provide extra space, use improved communications systems and accommodate emergency personnel from all levels of government.

The Phoenix Office of Emergency Management and fire department prepared the grant, with the support of the Arizona Department of Homeland Security.
