Where does your paycheck go? You might be surprisedPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX – Keeping a roof over your head is the single biggest expense you probably face.
In fact, most residents spend 27 percent of their income on housing. If you're spending more than that, you might want to re-evaluate your living situation.
Next on the list is transportation. When you combine your car payment, gas and maintenance that's where 15 percent of most people's check goes to.
Food is third on the list. Let's face it, you have to eat and grocery shopping usually accounts for 6 percent of your paycheck.
This might surprise some of you, but pensions are number four. Don't have a pension? Think again. Eight percent of your check is automatically taken out to fund people who are currently retired.
Number five is healthcare. Insurance rates have been consistently going up and right now 5 percent of your paycheck is probably spent on health insurance.
Entertainment is next and it's where 4 percent of your money goes. But remember, this is the one category that's the easiest to trim.
Finally, clothes round out the list of where your money is most likely to be spent. On average, most of us spend around 2 percent on looking nice.
Of course the most important category wasn't even on the list. That's putting aside money for yourself.
A good rule of thumb is to save a minimum of 10 percent of your income.
