Traffic fatalities: Crash victim found shot; Motorcycle loses control; Head-on collision

MARANA, Ariz. -- Last night, Marana police found a car had crashed at the intersection of Luckett Road and Linda Lane.

Steve McDermott, 41, died at the scene due to blunt force trauma caused by the crash.

But an autopsy revealed he'd been shot before the crash.

Witnesses told police they heard gun-fire during a fight between the victim and an unknown assailant.

The suspect drove off in an older-model Ford Bronco type SUV.  Anyone with information should call Marana police or 88-CRIME.


TUCSON, Ariz. -- Monday morning around 4:30, a Tucson man killed when he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed at River Road and Alvernon.

When sheriff's deputies arrived, they found 27-year-old Robert Adam Vaughn lying on the roadway dead from injuries suffered.

Vaughn was wearing a helmet, but suffered fatal injuries when he crashed into a cactus and a roadway sign.


TUCSON, Ariz. -- Another traffic fatality Monday morning just after 10 A.M. when three vehicles crashed on Valencia Road east of Kolb.

Christopher Happeny, 18, was heading east on Valencia at a high rate of speed when he lost control of his heavily loaded pick-up truck and crossed into the westbound lane.

One on-coming driver swerved off the road down an embankment to avoid the wreck, but a second vehicle collided head-on with Happeny's truck, killing him.

The other driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
