MESA, Ariz. -- A woman spit blood on two police officers as they tried to take her into custody after she allegedly assaulted her mother-in-law, according to the Mesa Police Department.

Officers responded to a home near McKellips Road and Country Club Drive around 6 p.m. Monday and learned that Alana Artega had assaulted her mother-in-law.

Sgt. Ed Wessing said Artega grabbed the victim around the neck and wouldn't let go. The victim's husband punched Artega in the mouth to get her to release her grip. Her mouth was bleeding from the punch.

The officers arrested Artega and took her to the patrol car. The officers described her as drunk and belligerent and said she refused to sit in the vehicle.

As the officers grabbed her and started to put her in the car, Wessing said Artega turned her head around and spit blood at them.

Blood went inside the mouth of one of the officers and all over his uniform shirt, outer carrier and gear. She spit blood on the other officer's right arm.

Officers subdued Artega and put her in the car.

She was booked on aggravated assault charges.
