Back-to-School Beauty Tips

Posted: Updated:

Back to school means busy mornings, so having your tween/teens and your own beauty items in order will get you out the door quicker.  As I was putting this segment together and organizing our family toiletries, I found some beauty items that I think work well.  Read on for ideas on organizing your morning beauty area and for a couple of product picks that will have everyone looking good and out the door on time!

First Get Organized!

An organized morning will improve your on-time departure record, I promise!  So here are some quick get organized tips that have made all the difference in our hectic household:

*Make all members of the family lay out their outfit the night before.  My daughter delights in this ritual because fashion is fun…my teenage son…not so much!  But making him (and myself) do this results in less delays because no one is frantically searching the dryer for that favorite shirt in the morning.  It was found the night before!

*Lay out accessories, too.  From head to toe, select the night before.  This includes the headband, earrings, necklace, belt, socks and more.  We've been late before due to mismatched socks and earrings!

*Get a jewelry organizer.  I bought some for my own necklaces and bracelets at The Container Store last year and this summer we found a cute one at Clarie's for my daughter's mounting collection of bling.  IKEA also has a good variety of baskets and organizers for shoes, clothes and other items that can pile up in your closet.  And Target has some cool rectangle-shaped baskets that are perfect for curling irons and brushes.  See the segment to see the stuff.

*Have the right products on hand.  This will help your teenager move faster, I promise.  I once heard the phrase that teens are like overgrown toddlers.  Yep, on some days, that is very true!  So having what they need when they need it during that crucial get-ready time in the mornings saves the day every time.

With that said, let's take a look at some of our favorite product picks.

Our Favorite Product Picks

*For the morning shower try philosophy sweet dreams shampoo, shower gel and bubble bath because it multi-tasks and works as both a shampoo and a shower gel, which saves time.  Plus this philosophy product supports a great cause.  100% of this product’s net proceeds will be donated to First Book which is a nonprofit organization that provides books to children in need.  To date, First Book has distributed more than 80 million books and educational resources to programs and schools serving children from low-income families. This cool and giving product hits store shelves in September.  $20 at philosophy stores and

*For the mornings when you find there is no time for a shampoo, try Schwarzkopf got 2b fat-tastic dry shampoo.  Both my daughter and I have tested this and it works like a charm giving you an extra day in between shampoos.  This is great when you are running late.  $5.99 at drug stores, Ulta and Wal-mart.

*When you or your teen wake with acne try Clearasil Daily Clear Oil-Free Daily Face Wash because the Sensitive Formula is gentle, won’t over dry skin and helps to clear up those pesky pimples.  Around $6 at drug stores, Wal-mart and other retailers.

*I also recommend La Roche-Posay Effaclar K Daily Renovating Anti-Relapse Salicylic Acid Acne Treatment because it is paraben-free, is a non-greasy treatment for acne and works as a maintenance product that keeps pimples at bay.  Simply apply morning and/or evening to entire face.  $27.50 at drug stores.

*To protect hair from damage from our morning beauty tools like blow dryers and curling irons, try John Frieda Collection Frizz-Ease Hair Serum Thermal Protection Formula because we tend to use our hair tools fast and frequently in the busy school year mornings.  This product protects the damage that hot tools can cause hair while also reducing the dreaded frizz those products and humid weather can cause.  $9.99 at drug stores

*Pack Hugo Naturals Hand Sanitizer in their back packs to keep germs at bay.  With organic ingredients like lavender oil, witch hazel and Aloe Vera, this quick spray sanitizer contains no parabens, artificial fragrances or colors.  $7.99 for a 4 oz or $4.99 for a 2 oz. bottle sold at Sprouts Farmers Market and Whole Foods.

*For a quick blemish fix try Dermablend Quick-Fix Concealer because this is what our show makeup artist Karen Hall uses and this brand can cover anything!  It will also cover bruises, scars, freckles and more and has SPF 30 sunscreen is fragrance-free, allergy-tested and is preservative-free.  $22 sold at Ulta and Macy’s.

*Don’t forget to moisturize their lips with Jurlique Love Balm because it is packed with beneficial ingredients like olive oil, beeswax, Vitamin E, soybean oil and more.  This handy little tin contains a lip ointment that can also be used throughout the day to remedy other dry areas like elbows, hands and more.  $15 at Sephora.

*For a fast morning manicure, try wet n wild Fast Dry Nail Color because one coat dries in 60 seconds and the formula contains no Formaldehyde, Toulene and Phthalates.  $1.99 at drug stores.

*For a shine-less and smooth complexion with a quick application, try Sally Hansen Natural Beauty Inspired By Carmindy Truly Translucent Loose Powder.  This ultra-fine loose powder with micronized color provides skin-perfecting coverage with a seamless, naturally translucent finish. Plus it comes with a unique sponge-in-tip applicator that delivers powder-to-skin adherence with no mess. Emollient papaya extract helps restore suppleness while bamboo powder helps absorb oil.  $12.95 in drug stores.

*And my favorite new brand that I discovered over the summer that my family loves is the South of France Spa Naturals from Good Health Natural Products. This line is 100% natural, paraben-free and is packaged in biodegradable and recyclable materials. My favorite South of France Spa Naturals items include the Cucumber Aloe French Milled Vegetable Soap, Cucumber Aloe Soothing Cleanser, Cucumber Aloe Soothing Scrub, Cucumber Aloe Soothing Mask and Cucumber Aloe Soothing Moisturizer. The soap sells for $5 and the cleanser, scrub, mask and moisturizer all sell for $12 each. For more information or to order, visit
