6-Vehicle wreck kills 1, injures 2Posted: Updated:
MESA, Ariz. – One person was killed and two others were injured in a six-vehicle wreck in Mesa Monday morning.
According to police on the scene in the area of Southern Avenue and 24th Street (between Gilbert and Lindsay roads), a man driving a white pickup truck suffered some kind of medical episode.
The eastbound Dodge pickup truck sideswiped two cars and then continued a bit farther down the street, stopping only when it hit a Ford Escape and a Chevy Tahoe. Video from the scene showed the back wheel of the pickup rolled up on the hood of the Escape. Debris from that collision hit a sixth vehicle, a Nissan.
The driver of the pickup was pronounced dead at the scene. It’s not yet clear if he died of injuries sustained in the crash or from the medical condition that apparently caused him to lose control of the vehicle. His name has not been released.
Investigators are trying to piece together what happened in the minutes leading up to the wreck.
Two people – one each from the Escape and the Tahoe -- were transported to a local hospital. Their injuries were believed to be serious but not life-threatening. Their conditions were not immediately available.
Southern Avenue is closed between 24th Street and Rose, which is just east of Gilbert Road.
