PHOENIX -- Police officers were called to a Phoenix apartment just before 2 a.m. Sunday for a man who had been badly assaulted.

The victim was able to direct officers to the apartment near Ninth Avenue and Camelback Road where he had been brutally beaten.

The 23-year-old victim was not entirely coherent due to head wounds from the beating.

The victim was transported to the hospital where he is expected to survive his injuries.

Investigators are trying to piece together a description of the suspect or suspects, but as of Sunday night, hadn't been able to interview the victim due to his condition.

Investigators discovered the victim had been beaten in the apartment, but a motive is not known.

The woman, who is the renter of the apartment, and her children were unaccounted for but have since been located. It is not known if they were the victims of foul play or otherwise involved in the incident.

The woman told police she was gone overnight and didn't have any information about what had happened.

Police have little to go on at this point and are asking for the public's help. Anyone with information about the assault should contact the Phoenix Violent Crimes Bureau at 602-262-6141 or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS.
