PHOENIX - Two parents are behind bars accused of abusing their 6-year-old son.

Early Tuesday morning investigators were called to a Phoenix apartment complex near Glendale and 19th avenues for a child not breathing.

Police found the boy not breathing and having convulsions and transported him to Phoenix Children's Hospital where he underwent surgery.

He remains in critical condition with massive brain swelling and bruising to his chest, legs, sides and back.

It appeared as if some imprint markings were caused by a belt buckle and possibly wire hanger, according to Sgt. Trent Crump with the Phoenix Police Department.

Investigators also allege that at some point the victim's head was shoved against a bedroom door.

During the investigation, Benny Gibson, 49, and Jennifer Paul, 37, gave several conflicting accounts of what caused their son's injuries.

Both parents were arrested for child abuse, a dangerous crime against children.
