Scottsdale CEO speaks about family deaths

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Jonah Shacknai, CEO of Scottsdale-based Medicis Pharmaceutical Corporation, spoke publicly Monday night for the first time since his girlfriend and son died in California.

In July, Shacknai's girlfriend, Rebecca Zahau, was found naked and hanging from a balcony at Shacknai's Coronado mansion.

Earlier in the week, Shacknai's son suffered a fatal fall in the home.

In Monday's conference call with Medicis investors, Shacknai began with a personal message about the deaths.

"We've obviously had an extraordinarily difficult time. We've undertaken tragedy and losses one couldn't imagine experiencing in a lifetime," Shacknai told those on the call.

"I've obviously been spending time with family and loved ones and during that time, the company's day-to-day operations have continued without interruption," he added.

Shacknai said he plans to return to his normal work schedule soon.

The deaths remain a mystery and under investigation.

San Diego investigators won't say or don't know if Zahau's death was a murder or a suicide.
