MESA, Ariz. – Mesa fire crews extricated a woman from a vehicle following a rollover crash near Southern Avenue and Lindsay Road Monday morning.

It is not known what caused the single-vehicle rollover, which happened at approximately 8:30 a.m. The car rolled into a retaining wall, causing extensive damage.

Fire crews had to do a technical extrication to cut the woman out of the vehicle, according to Capt. Forrest Smith with the Mesa Fire Department.

Two children who were in the vehicle were transported to local hospitals.

One of the children, who appeared to be under 6 months old, was crying, which Smith said "is a really good sign." He said she did not have obvious trauma. The older child's injuries are not known at this time.

Smith said both children were in car seats and that most likely saved their lives.

The woman was flown to a local hospital after she was cut out of the vehicle. The extent of her injuries is not known, but she was alert and conscious.

At this time, it is not clear if she is the mother of the children.

Southern Avenue is closed west of Lindsay Road. Broadway Road and U.S. 60 are recommended alternates.
