RB Wells gets No. 1 back nod, but questions linger

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) -- Beanie Wells is the unquestioned No. 1 running back for the Arizona Cardinals, a status he's always coveted.

Still, questions linger about the former Ohio State star's NFL future, as much for his durability as anything else.

Wells acknowledges that last season's knee problem left him bruised mentally as well as physically. He thinks he will perform better now that he knows he is the top back on the team.

The Cardinals paved the way for Wells' ascent by trading Tim Hightower to the Washington Redskins.

Wells' backups are rookie Ryan Williams, a second-round draft pick out of Virginia Tech, and speedy but diminutive second-year pro LaRod Stephens-Howling.
