CHANDLER, Ariz. – A couple is accused of stealing almost $100,000 in copper from a trail in Chandler to support a drug problem.

A string of copper thefts have been reported along Chandler’s Paseo Trail since 2010. It’s a pathway along the Consolidated Canal that connects with the Heritage Trail.

Similar crimes were also committed along Heritage Trail. Police say $25,000 worth of copper was stolen in Chandler alone along Paseo Trail.

Property Crimes detectives from Chandler and Gilbert, as well as agents with the Mesa and Tempe police departments launched a joint operation to capture the alleged thieves.

Kirk Wise, 45, and his girlfriend Saqnna Silva, 38, were reportedly seen stealing copper from Paseo Trail on Aug. 1.

Police say Wise may have stolen up to $95,000 in copper since January 2010. Officers believe a large portion of their profits went towards supporting a methamphetamine habit.

Both suspects face multiple counts of aggravated criminal damage, theft and trafficking in stolen property.

Anyone with further information on this case is asked to call Chandler police at 480-782-4130.
