Arizona clears roster room for Marquis, ZieglerPosted: Updated:
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- The Arizona Diamondbacks have cleared roster room for newly acquired right-handed pitchers Jason Marquis and Brad Ziegler, optioning right-handed pitchers Sam Demel and Ryan Cook to Triple-A Reno.
Arizona also announced it has selected the contract of infielder Paul Goldschmidt from Double-A Mobile. He was in the lineup at first base and batting seventh Monday night for the second-place D-backs in the opener of a key series with the NL West-leading San Francisco Giants.
Arizona acquired Marquis from the Washington Nationals for minor league infielder Zachary Walters on Saturday. Ziegler was traded from the Oakland Athletics on Sunday and only had to cross San Francisco Bay to join his new club.
The 23-year-old Goldschmidt batted .306 with 30 home runs and 94 RBIs in 103 games for Mobile. At the time of his promotion, he led all minor leaguers in home runs and RBIs and ranked third with 82
