SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Joe Saunders came within one out of a shutout and Justin Upton and Kelly Johnson each drove in two runs to lift the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 6-1 win over the San Diego Padres on Tuesday night.

Saunders (7-8) overcame his season-long, first-inning struggles and had two outs in the ninth when he surrendered a solo homer to Jesus Guzman. The right-hander, who allowed six hits, struck out four and walked two, came in having surrendered 16 earned runs in the first inning of his 20 starts this season for an ERA of 7.20.

The Diamondbacks also took advantage of Orlando Hudson's mental blunder to score an unearned run in the sixth.

Dustin Moseley (3-10) took the loss.

D-backs get Putz back from DL

The Arizona Diamondbacks yesterday reinstated closer J.J. Putz from the 15-day disabled list and placed infielder Geoff Blum on it with a broken right pinkie finger.

The team also selected the contract of outfielder Collin Cowgill from Triple-A Reno.

Putz missed 19 games with elbow tendinitis after being placed on the disabled list on July 1, retroactive to June 29. He was 1-2 with 21 saves and a 3.12 ERA in 34 games. David Hernandez has pitched well in Putz's absence, leaving the Diamondbacks with a tough decision now that he's back.

Blum broke his finger while fielding a ground ball against Colorado on Sunday, less than a week after being activated from the DL with a knee injury.

Cowgill .hit 354 with 13 homers and 70 RBIs at Reno.
