Mesa to begin charging high-school athletes $100Posted: Updated:
MESA, Ariz. (AP) -- Mesa Public Schools are about to begin charging all high school athletes $100 to participate in Arizona Interscholastic Association sports.
District spokeswoman Kathy Bareiss says the district was forced to begin charging student athletes because of reduced state funding to Arizona school districts.
The school board had weighed raising the fee by $150 but settled on the $100 fee to offset the cost of sports. The district thinks the fee charged to athletes at its six high schools will likely bring in about $600,000.
The fee takes effect Aug. 10 and the payments may count toward a tax credit for public education.
