Man admits to stealing ambulance, taking it on joyridePosted: Updated:
PHOENIX - Phoenix police have arrested a man who stole a fire department ambulance early Sunday morning.
While firefighters were on scene of a house fire near 43rd and Glendale avenues police say Travis Ward, 28, got behind the wheel of a running ambulance and took off.
Ward drove the ambulance through the area of the 4300 block of west McLellan and the 4100 block of West Maryland and then struck a home in that area.
Along the way police said he hit seven different objects such as fences, poles and vehicles.
Police say it is not uncommon to leave an ambulance running at the scene.
Ward admitted to police that he had been smoking marijuana very heavily before the theft.
Ward was booked on charges of theft of a means or transportation as well as felony criminal damage.
There was some damage to the ambulance although the exact extent is not known.
According to police, Ward does have a criminal history with the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.
