Tucson man gets prison in ammo export case

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) -- A Tucson man has been sentenced to more than five years in federal prison for attempting to export 9,000 rounds of ammunition to Mexico.

Federal prosecutors say 35-year-old Jesus Francisco Lopez received a 63-month sentence Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Tucson.

They say Lopez met with two Mexican men on Dec. 26, 2010, and led them to his Tucson house where all three men loaded the ammunition into a van.

The two Mexican citizens then drove the van with the ammunition back to Mexico. However, they were stopped by federal agents and the ammunition was found hidden under the hood.

Authorities say a subsequent search of Lopez's house revealed nearly 20,000 additional rounds of ammunition which was to be picked up and taken to Mexico.
