Two in custody after leading police on high-speed chase

MESA, Ariz. - A man and a woman are in custody after leading police on a high-speed chase Tuesday afternoon.

The chase began near Fort McDowell Casino, traveled down State Route 87, the Beeline Highway, and then ended near Mesa Drive and McKellips Road.

According to the Department of Public Safety, the female, Melanie Denis Vest, 32, was behind the wheel of a silver minivan and the male, Eric Johnson Vest, 29,  was in the passenger seat.

Both suspects were taken to the hospital to unspecified treatment.

Melanie will be booked on two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer for the two occasions where she swerved to attempt to run over a DPS officer deploying stop sticks, felony flight and aggravated DUI.

Melanie's license is currently under suspension.

Eric will be booked by Mesa police for an outstanding arrest warrant stemming from a shoplifting charge.

DPS, the Mesa Police Department and the Phoenix Police Firebird Helicopter all assisted in the chase.
