PHOENIX – A man is behind bars after a shootout with Phoenix police over the weekend.

Officers received a 911 call about a man firing a gun near an abandoned house in the area 28th Avenue just south of Interstate 10 early Sunday morning.

When they arrived on the scene, one of the officers discovered Christopher Rodriguez hiding behind a trash can in a nearby alley.

Rodriguez reportedly ignored the officer’s commands, refusing to put down his weapon and surrender. According to Sgt. Steve Martos of the Phoenix Police Department, Rodriguez raised his handgun and pointed it at the officer.

The officer fired several times, but did not hit the suspect. Rodriguez fled toward the vacant house, Martos said in a news release.

Additional officers were in the front yard of that house and quickly arrested Rodriguez. The 26-year-old is now facing a charge of aggravated assault on a police officer.

No injuries were reported in the incident.
